The Reeve tells a story about two bible clerks that are traveling, riding the Warden’s horse to the Millers. They try to scam the Miller into giving them free corn for bread. This corn has already been stolen once, by the Miller. The Miller discovers their actions. He gets angry and releases the Warden’s horse, making it impossible for the clerks to get far away. Once they were able to catch the horse, it was dark, which meant they had to stay overnight. Having to all sleep in the same room, confrontation arises. Alan, (one of the bible clerks), tries to sleep with the Miller’s daughter. John, (the second bible clerk), wanted to be in the same boat, so decided to sleep with the Miller’s wife. The Miller’s wife did not know that she slept with John, and believed it to be her husband. After sleeping with the daughter, Alan accidentally got in bed with the Miller. The Miller wakes up, realizes what has happened, and they begin to fight. The Miller’s wife thought the the clerks were fighting, so she grabs the stick, and hits what she thought to be was one of the clerks. Instead, she strikes the Miller, which causes his death. The bible clerks take the corn and leave, not having to pay for their actions.
